    Wrapping Qualities Explained

Last weekend I had the privilege of helping to run a workshop with Tina Hoffman at at The Wrap Show. Together, we explored the language the babywearing community commonly uses to describe wrapping qualities, defining terms and discussing what they really mean.   Handling a variety of wraps which exemplified the different qualities was something the workshop attendees found very helpful. I’d love to offer that to everyone reading this post, but sadly, we can’t feel wraps through the internet…! So instead, here’s my best take on terms commonly used to describe wrapping qualities. I hope it’s helpful. If you have questions, or comments, please do let me know…

    Didymos Lisca Minos

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos / Lisca Fibre: 100% cotton Measurements: 489cm long, 66cm wide, 232gsm Key words: Soft, thin, stretchy, bouncy, snuggly I’m a longtime fan of Didymos’ lisca weave, but have only owned ‘thick’ versions (250+gsm), so I was excited to try a thinner lisca.     The colourway of is Minos really striking and grabs your attention immediately. From further away Minos appears a dark, saturated aubergine. However, close up it becomes apparent that there are 3 different colour threads – black, blue and pink. The blue and pink threads are very vibrant (almost electric) in their colour, and they really pop against the black…

    Didymos Ada Natur

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos / Ada Fibre: 68% cotton, 25% hemp, 7% tussah silk Measurements: 479cm long, 67cm wide, 275gsm Key words: Supportive, textured, elegant, sheen, soft     Natties! Ah, possibly one of the most divisive colourways in the babywearing world. Some love them, some are terrified of them. I used to fall in the latter camp (the mud! The tomato sauce! The horror!) but having taking the plunge with a Natural Silk Prima, I have happily decamped to join the natty lovers. I adore the subtle elegance, the effortless goes-with-all-outfits style (and it turns out they’re not the stain attracting nightmares I envisaged).  …

    Didymos Ada

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos /  Ada Fibre: 100% cotton Measurements: 480cm long, 76.5cm wide, 214 gsm Key words: Thin, smooshy, mouldable, stretchy, textured This is a new weave for Didymos, so I was very excited to have the chance to test it out and evaluate the wrapping qualities. When I first took Ada out of the box, I was surprised by two things: how soft it was, even in loom state, and how incredibly intricate the pattern was. Of course, intricate patterns are nothing new for Didymos, but Ada is even more detailed than their previous offerings. Ada is a wonderful mix of dark denim blue and a warm,…

    Woven Wings Northern Line

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Woven Wings  /  Metro Tiles Fibre: 84% Egyptian cotton / 16% bourette silk Measurements: 533cm long, 61cm wide, 312 gsm Key words: Blankety, grippy, supportive   The first word which came to mind when I pulled Northern Line out of its bag was “blankety”. As I hefted its weight in my hands I could feel it was a substantial, thick wrap, but it was also wonderfully soft and floppy. It was close textured and felt fairly smooth in hand. It was a pleasure to handle!       The aesthetic of the wrap is simple, understated but strong. The shapes are not at all…

    PinkNova Polaris Morning Coffee

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: PinkNova  /  Polaris Fibre: 53% bio cotton, 29% superfine wool, 18% cashmere Measurements: 497cm long,  65cm wide, 299 gsm Key words: Thick, cosy, supportive   For many babywearers, autumn is when wool wraps really come into their own – so I was excited to try out Polaris Morning Coffee just as the colder weather was arriving. A holiday from a lovely friend, this was also my first experience of Pink Nova. My first impression of Morning Coffee was that it’s a lovely colour. It’s a true neutral brown: neither really warm nor really cool. The constrasting colour is somewhere inbetween cream and white, cool…

    Woven Wings Blue Sapphire Geo

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Woven Wings  / Geo Fibre: 54% ethical merino, 46% Egyptian cotton Measurements: 494cm long,  63cm wide, 205 gsm Key words: Thin, soft, mouldable, smooth   I was recently lucky to host a travelling Woven Wings Geo tester wrap. Nicknamed Blue Sapphire, the reason for this moniker was immediately apparent when I opened the package and first saw the wrap. WW produce a glorious range of designs and colours. Some are wonderfully subtle (Labyrinth tester, anyone?) and some are fantastically bold. Blue Sapphire’s striking looks set it down firmly in the latter category. The blue is remarkably saturated and vibrant – it’s actually hard to capture…

    Didymos Cashmere Silk Ellipsen

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos / Ellipsen Fibre: 50% cotton, 30% silk, 20% cashmere Measurements: 396cm long, 68.5 cm wide, 135 gsm Key words: Thin, soft, glide, sheen   Cashmere Silk Ellipsen (CSE) is perhaps the least well known of Didymos’ mulberry silk blend natty wraps, but is still HSA and difficult to track down. CSE is 50% cotton, 30% silk and 20% cashmere. And yes, this blend feels just as luxurious as it sounds. Like NSN (Natural Silk Nino), NSM (Natural Silk Mille) and NSI (Natural Silk Indio), CSE is unusual in that it is woven with all of its fibres in both the warp *and* the…

    Didymos Garten im Herbst

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos / Garten im Herbst Fibre: 60% cotton, 40% wool Pre-wash measurements: 453 cm long, 70 cm wide, 284 gsm Post-wash measurements: 444 cm long, 70 cm wide, 292 gsm Key words: Supportive, solid, robust     Woven exclusively for Natürlich Wachsen, Garten im Herbst (“Garden in Autumn”) intrigued me as soon as I saw it. It reminds me a little of Didymos’ existing bird weave, Vogels, but the addition of branches with angular foliage and the different style of birds makes for a more quirky design. This is one of those patterns which really comes to life when wrapped; the branches lie beautifully,…

    Didymos November’s Mist

AT A GLANCE Brand / weave: Didymos / Diamonds Fibre: 100% cotton (of which unspecified % is chenille) Pre-wash measurements: 502 cm long, 68.5 cm wide, 322 gsm Post-wash measurements: 475 cm long, 67.5 cm wide, 350 gsm (post-iron) Key words: Cushy, supportive, snuggly, blankety, dense.   Released in November 2014, November’s Mist (Herbstnebel) is one heck of a wrap! Didymos chose their classic diamond weave to showcase a type of cotton yarn never before used in a woven wrap: chenille. November’s Mist was released in both a regular width and, shortly afterwards, an extra wide width.   I was lucky enough to purchase the regular-width version new. Straight of…
